EGS 2025 Season Blog

MAY - RIPON GC - LEAGUE EVENT NUMBER 3 - OUTING NUMBER 4 - 2025

April - Brass Castle GC - The cliffe cup - EGS major NUMBER 1 - 2025

April - Brass Castle GC - The cliffe cup - EGS major NUMBER 1 - 2025

The Eaglescliffe Golf Society’s recent outing at Ripon Golf Club was, once again, a showcase of great golf and even better company, and if there’s two words to explain the day, those words are "Ross Doherty."

Ross took first place with an outstanding 38 points on a tight and fast track. He didn't stop there either, he also bagged himself one of the the Long Drive Awards,  the Par 5 in 3 award, and made the day’s only 2 on hole 7, winning the long overdue 2 sweep for £127. Well done Ross, please don't come back.

Moving on from the Doherty onslaught, Adam Gray, who’s been relatively quiet this season, finished a very respectable second with 37 points. Despite his recent low profile, Adam proved that operating under the radar, can sometimes be deadly.

2025 new member, Ste Cook, resembling Mr Beard Meets Food, also made quite an impression, securing third place with 36 points. Ste has had a great debut season so far, managing to sit 4th in the league after event 4, with an average SB score of 35.66, keep it up, pal.

In a turn of events, thanks to a clerical error (which we’re calling “the surprise payout”), Richard Coull was paid out for fourth place with 35 points — because who doesn’t love a little unexpected bonus, right? well done Rich.

The Long Drive competition was a close call, with Marc "Hazzla" Harrison securing the second-longest drive of the day. Meanwhile, our “pin seekers,” Adam Gray and Michael Wood, demonstrated precision and consistency, each claiming well-deserved prizes for their efforts.

And we can’t forget about the Ace Pot which continues to grow and now stands at a substantial £505. Stay tuned, because that pot is just waiting for someone to make EGS history.

Lastly, the final round of 32 singles games were played today, with the follwing results:

Chris peers vs Michael Wood - Michael wins 3&2

Lee Ward vs Mathie round 2 - Lee wins 3&1

Rob Cotts vs Sean Underdown coin flip - Sean wins the flip

Cheers for getting your games played lads, onto the round of 16 we go!

The course itself was nothing short of magnificent. Situated in the scenic surrounds of Ripon, Yorkshire, it offered a perfect blend of challenging holes and breathtaking views. A special thanks to Stephen Kitching, for securing such an excellent venue; your efforts truly made the day memorable.

Looking ahead, dont forget to mark your calendars, as our next outing will be on 31st May 2025 at Thirsk & Northallerton.

We’re already looking forward to another round of good golf, good banter, and perhaps even that elusive hole-in-one.

Until then, keep swinging and enjoying the game.

April - Brass Castle GC - The cliffe cup - EGS major NUMBER 1 - 2025

April - Brass Castle GC - The cliffe cup - EGS major NUMBER 1 - 2025

Its now April, and major season has officially begun, perhaps more important than the Masters, the EGS "Cliffe Cup" Strokeplay Championship was on the cards. This was held at Brass Castle Golf Club in Middlesbrough. Now despite the unfortunate course conditions, including very poor greens, we enjoyed wonderful weather that made for a pleasant day in Teesside (if such a thing exists).

The event brought together an enthusiastic group of 39 players, a record for the EGS, all whom were eager to compete for the coveted Cliffe Cup title, the navy star on next years clothing and of course major bragging rights, excuse the pun.

In 3rd spot was Stevie "SNR" Butler, an outsider for the EGS official bookmaker "Butler Power" who finished with a notable score of 70 nett. Great job, Stevie, for your solid gameplay!

Tom Nelson put up a strong fight, finishing right behind the winner with a score of 68 nett, taking second spot.

However, Tommy gun and Butler SNR weren't quite good enough on the day, as Nathan Lewis claimed the top spot with an impressive score of 80 gross and 67 nett! His stellar performance on the course set him apart from the competition, showcasing both skill and determination and true EGS spirit. Nathan will take the Cliffe cup back to his boozer for the next 12 months, and is now officially an EGS Major winner... congratulations!

The EGS Long drive awards for this event went to Nicky Small and Graeme Bailey, good work lads. Whilst the Pin seekers went to Nathan Lewis and Michael Rushforth, good shooting. The last award for the day was the P5I3, which went to Patrick the long Stokes.

The day seen four 2's, which once again means the £110, 2 sweep will rollover to the next one.  The ace pot also rolls over to the next one, sitting at an approximate £500 for the next outing…

Singles games:

•  Ste Cook vs Adam Carter - Ste Cook wins 1 up

•  Jonathan Boyle vs Richard Coull - Boyley wins 3&2

•  Mark Yule vs Andrew Coupland - Yuley wins 9&7

•  Marc Harrison vs Ryan Davidson - Marc wins 2 up

•  James Barron vs Lee Atkinson - Lee ako wins 4&3

Thats 3 outings in the bag for 2025, meaning there will now be an official league table result. As a reminder, the league championship is based on the best 3 stableford scores, averaged over the season from the possible 11 outings, results to follow in the coming weeks.

Thats a wrap for the first major of the season, a massive thank you to everyone who made it out today, and a big thank you to our sponsors, Butler Bros Environmental Solutions and Next Level Security Services.

Lastly, the EGS has now formed with Stockton Cricket Club for the foreseeable, watch this space ~ 4 Teams - One Club.

February - Newbiggin GC - EGS League Outing Number 1 - SEASON OPENER 2025

February - Newbiggin GC - EGS League Outing Number 1 - SEASON OPENER 2025

The Eaglescliffe Golf Society gathered for our much-anticipated second league outing of the year at the breathtaking Bamburgh Castle Golf Club. With the iconic castle offering a stunning backdrop, we not only celebrated golf but also the camaraderie that makes our society so special.

Welcoming New Members: We are thrilled to welcome six new players to our ranks, including four new members: Danny Heald, Sam Latherton, Jimmy Dempsey, and Kris George. Joining us today as guests were Niall Reel and Daniel Tolptt. We look forward to seeing all of you more often on the course!

Competition Highlights: It was a day filled with thrilling competition and impressive performances. In an incredibly close contest, Mr. Mark Yule secured 3rd place with a commendable score of 40 points, just narrowly missing out on higher honours on count back.

In 2nd place, representing the Eaglescliffe Golf Society as vice chairman, Stephen Kitching also scored 40 points. But taking home the gold medal was none other than our founder, Stefan Butler, who shot an impressive 74 gross for a total of 41 points. Congratulations to all our winners!

The day was filled with excitement, as Michael Rushforth took home both pin seeker prizes, showing remarkable accuracy on the greens. Meanwhile, Jamie Simcox and Sean Underdown claimed the long drive awards, proving their prowess off the tee.

Additionally, Jamie Simcox showcased his skills by taking home the par 5 in 3.

It's worth mentioning that we had several players scoring 2’s throughout the day, which means that the sweep will roll over to our next event.

We did not have any singles games played during this outing, so as a gentle reminder, please make sure to complete your singles matches by or as close to the deadline as possible for the next event.

Looking Forward: As we conclude another successful outing, we look forward to our next gathering at Brass Castle/Middlesbrough GC, on 06.04.2025.

Thank you to all participants who made this event enjoyable, and a special thank you to the staff at Bamburgh Castle Golf Club for their excellent hospitality.

If you know anyone interested in joining our vibrant golf community, please encourage them to reach out through our website.

Let's keep swinging, and see you all soon!

February - Newbiggin GC - EGS League Outing Number 1 - SEASON OPENER 2025

February - Newbiggin GC - EGS League Outing Number 1 - SEASON OPENER 2025

Welcome to Season 5 of the Eaglescliffe Golf Society! As we celebrate our 5th year together, we’re excited to reflect on the incredible journey we've had. Our chairman, Stefan Butler, has expressed his pride in how far we've come, and we can't wait to dive into another season filled with camaraderie and competition.

During our first event for this season, we faced some challenging wet and windy weather, but the greens were in impressive condition, allowing for an enjoyable round of golf, even in February.

A special congratulations goes to Chris Peers, who claimed victory with an impressive score of 43 points. Newcomer Ste Cook made his mark by finishing strong in second place with 40 points, while our resident moaner, Mark Butler, took third with a score of 40 points, being beat on countback.

We also want to extend our congratulations to Jamie Simcox, for his outstanding win in the singles matchplay competition, where he took down Patrick Stokes with a decisive 3&2 victory.

Our long drive prizes were awarded to Ross Doherty and Lee Ward, who displayed impressive power off the tee. The pin seeker prizes went to Stephen Kitching and Michael Wood for their precision shots. Sean Underdown also shone by taking the Par 4 in 3.

Unfortunately, there were no twos this time around, so the 2 sweep will carry over to our next event. On a more exciting note, the Ace and Albatross pot sits at £411, waiting for that elusive hole-in-one.

As we look forward to the rest of the season, we’re thrilled to welcome our new committee members for 2025: Stephen Kitching as Vice Chairman, Michael Wood as Captain, and Mark Butler as Vice Captain. Their leadership and fresh ideas will undoubtedly help us continue to grow.

Don’t forget our next society event at the picturesque Bamburgh Castle on 9th March 2025. It promises to be an unforgettable day of golf!

A huge thank you to everyone for your participation and for making the Eaglescliffe Golf Society such a vibrant community. Here’s to a fantastic Season 5 ahead, filled with memorable rounds and lasting friendships! ⛳️

Cheers!
