The first outing of the 2021 season was hosted at Seaton Carew GC, the tenth oldest links course in England, and Sky Sports legend, Peter Aliss' favourite course. The day itself was very typical of links golf in February, with a 4 club wind and temperatures not rising above 6 degrees, it was always going to be a tough one.
The standard of golf on the day was superb, considering this was many of the lads first time playing since 2020. Paul Sirrell, Adam Carter and Mark Butler all came home with 37 Stableford points, Paul taking the 3rd place spot on count back.
Chris Peers pipped the post into second spot with a 40 pointer, shooting 11 over par, for a -2 handicap round on the day. However, this was not quite good enough to take the win on the links.
Jonathan Saint, Mr Jetaire himself, managed a 41 point round shooting -4 under his handicap, resulting in the number 1 spot and a 5 shot docking moving him out division 4, into division 3.
The longest drive winners were Marky "Medium" Butler and Graeme "Boom Boom" Bailey.
The pin seeker winners were the EGS Chairman himself, Stefan Butler and Marc "Hazzla" Harrison.
A great start to the 2022 season.
The second outing and league event number two was hosted at the lovely Romanby Golf Club in Northallerton. With spring on the horizon, the conditions were worlds away from the first outing at Seaton. With no wind and blazing sunshine, high scores were expected today. However, this outing ended up being one of the lowest scoring rounds since we started back in 2020, nobody in the society managing a 40+ point card, it was anyones game.
As expected, the course was in pretty good shape, however the putting surfaces had recently been hollow tined, which made work with the flat stick difficult for all.
Coming in 3rd spot with a total of 34 points was Daniel "The Acklam Assassin" Mellanby, his second top 3 finish in the last 2 outings. Second place was taken by Big Bazza James Barron, who beat Dan on countback for the silver spot. However both performances were outshone by Jake Arondelle, coming home with 38 points and a nett 74 shot, taking the win on the day.
The pin seeker winners were Stefan "The Gaffer" Butler and Lee "The Jetvac" Doherty
Longest drives were won by Big Bazza Barron and Graeme "Boom Boom" Bailey, Graeme taking his second long drive of the year.
Onto the next one at the second home of the EGS, Eaglescliffe Golf Club.
We are now into April and the EGS season is well and truly underway, what better time to visit the second home of the EGS, Eaglescliffe Golf Club. The first outing ever ran on a Sunday and a fantastic turnout of 40+ golfers, all gearing up for the biggest prize pool so far.
Eaglescliffe has some of the best greens in the country and offers a great challenge, for what it looses in length, it makes up for with some tricky tight fairways and immaculate putting surfaces.
With 40 players, the scores were expected to be high, this proved to be true with several upper 30 pointers and a handful of 40+ point finishes.
Stefan "The Gaffer" Butler took third place, with an 8 over gross, 69 nett and 41 points. This was bettered by big Daniel "The Acklam Assassin" Mellanby, who managed his best knock in the society, 42 points and a nett 70 scored, -2 handicap. However, Callum Waites played out of his skin on the day, putting in his final putt on 18 for an 83 gross and 68 nett score, resulting in 43 points. This meaning, an automatic 3 shot docking, Callum now nearing single figures in the society handicap table.
Longest drives were taken by Daz "Reanimator" Stockton and Robbie "The Heart Wont Stop Itself" Cotts.
Pin Seekers were won by big Ross Doherty and Calum "Ronaldo" Waites, another win on the day for him.
A cracking day for all involved, followed by a trip to the 19th hole. Thats the last league outing now until June as the infamous Captains day takes the May event date.
The big one, the almighty Captains day has landed, and what a venue for it, as chosen by this years captain Adam Gray, the stunning Wynyard Golf Club. The venue is situated in Wynyard village, home of Duncan Bannatyne and Liverpool and Newcastle Legend Kevin Keegan.
With the first piece of silverware up for grabs, the lads were well and truly buzzing for it. With the Texas Scramble format being the order of the day and a raffle as well as mega prize pool, the competition was always going to be fierce. The team captains were selected and for the first time, the almighty "wheel of names" was brought into play to select the teams. A tradition which has been such a pivotal part of the society since its first use.
Team Jetaire were the 2021 shield holders and high expectations were set for a second win given their performance in 2021. However, that was not the tale of the tape for the May outing.
The day came down to two teams battling it out for the title, both of which managed 52 points. Captain Bailey, playing with Stefan Butler, Jake Arondelle and guest Gareth Evans were pipped on count back by Captain Wood, Tom Nelson, James Barron and Glen Faulkner, both teams shooting low 60's gross, sublime golf all round.
Longest drives were taken by Big Bazza Barron once again and Billingham legend, Jonathan Boyle.
Pin Seekers were won by Jetaire boss, Darren Pavvan and Jetaire dogs body, Jake Arondelle.
The raffle was a mega success and one too many beers were sunk this day, however, plenty of rest time was available before the next outing at Sharply GC in June. See you there.
June, 20 degrees, hard and fast golf course and booze flowing, what more can a man want? Onto Sharpley GC in Seaham, an absolutely cracking track with a vast historic heritage, from World War 2 plane wrecks to pre Roman time architecture, this course has some stories, funnily enough, we made some of our own today as well...
With the wheel of names complete, bacon sarny and pre round pints sunk, the lads arrived to the tee box for the 10:04 first tee. A standard first tee nerve shot from Adam "The Captain" Gray, a straight pull into the long stuff, a medicine shot and a few blunders following, resulting in a 7 on the card, a typical start for him, he wont mind me saying that. However, thats where the high scores ended and the performance begun. With 2 years of society scoring not really bettering 40 points, Ad made easy work of what was a very hard course on the day, a 91 gross resulting in a 59 nett (yes you read that right) and a total of 51 points. Ad obviously took the win, but not without a 7.6 shot docking, leaping out of division 4 into division 3, well earned son.
With a very respectful score of 83 and a nett 65, Graeme "Boom Boom" Bailey took second with 44 points, a quality score on the day which would normally win without any pressure from below. He also took the win over Callum Waites in the singles championships, 5&4.
Coming in 3rd spot, as consistent as ever and pretty much the story of 2022 so far, Jonathan Saint shoots a 93, for a nett 68 and 42 points. Big changes in the league standings were made.
The long drives were won by Stefan "The Gaffer" Butler and Graeme "Boom Boom" Bailey and the pin seekers went to new member Callan Smith, a man to watch for the future and Graeme Bailey once again.
Lastly, Ross Doherty took a 3 outing rollover 2 sweep with the only 2 of the day on a par 3, Ross picking up over £100.
One final note, this trip seen a very special moment and the true spirit of the society, when a whip round was done for one of the members who unfortunately had some shoes stolen on the day, the money was spent on replacing the shoes and donating a good amount to a local Leukaemia charity, top work.
Onto Kirkby Moorside for a league/4 man open in July.
Half of the year has now passed us by, were into July and the EGS visited Kirkby Moorside GC, nestled in the North Yorkshire Moors and proudly a top 30 golf course in the north of England. The weather was ideal and the shorts were out displaying some truly pale Englishman's legs. This weekend was bittersweet, given the GOAT himself, mr Tiger Woods took what would more than likely be his last competitive walk down the 18th at St Andrew's, during the 150th open, thanks for the memories. Im not crying, you are.
Todays format saw us playing a 4BBB standard, in a club open, with the best 2 to count from 1-16 and all 4 to count from 17-18, big numbers were expected. The teams were drawn and we got to it. James Barron, Jamie Simcox and Jonathan Saint came back with respectable sores of 91, 92 and 93, netting upper 60's to lower 70's on the day for mid 30's stableford.
Ste "Mr USA" Eastick put a gross score together of 90, meaning a nett 65 for 41 points, this resulting in a 3.6 shot docking, well played sir. But, this wasn't enough to pip the big man Ste Kitchy "Yaya" shoots a gross 80, missing a putt on the 18th for a 79. Ste manages a 43 pointer and his first win since joining the society just a few months prior, 3.2 shots were docked, a handicap now of 13.5, much more realistic for Kitchy's ability, still a bandit mind you.
The long drives were won by Lee "The Jurors Dreamboat" Atkinson and James "Big Bazza" Barron, this man can hit a ball. The pin seekers were won by Mick "The Silent Assassin" Wood and Jonathan "Billy Boy" Boyle.
Last but not least, Jamie "Lar de Dar" Simcox wins the 2 sweep, re-starting the prize pool for the next outing.
A final note, a big well done to Jonathan Boyle, James Barron, Garry Bainbridge and Jamie Simcox for placing joint 4th in the open out of 30 teams, good knock lads. See you all for the away day at none other than the Belfry.
The big one is here, the annual away weekend, and what a venue for it, the Belfry Brabazon and PGA.
With the gaffer not available for this weekend, this trip was hosted by Billy boy Boyle, 2 x league events and a weekend overall event were the plans for the scorchio August weekend.
Day 1 - With the Brabazon being on the cards for the Saturday, the lads were clearly geared up to face one of England's best tracks and one of the most famous holes in golf, the par 4 (driveable for some) 10th. Pre trip, Jamie "Lar de Dar" Simcox almost done a U turn due to some bad health, however he was persuaded to stay and for good reason, romping home with the win on day 1 with 33 points. Stevie "Senior" Butler came in close second, only a point behind giving him a good start for the weekend overall trophy. Ryan "The Viking" Davidson took his first pin seeker of the season, along with Paul "Sizzla" Sirrell". Long Drives were both taken by Sizzla also.
Day 2 - Almost 40% down on manpower due to unknown reasons, the PGA awaits for todays round. The Butlers were on form on day 2, with Marky "El Bandito" Butler taking the top spot with 42 points, and Butler Senior taking second spot with 35 points, beating Ben Cordiner on count back.
Onto the next one back in gods country (North East), at the lovely Throston GC, playing for a new trophy for 2022, the Seniors Vase.
Back from the sunny skies and high temperatures at The Belfry, conditions were a little more northern for our next outing at Throston GC, nestled in the beautiful town of Hartlepool (lol), just off the coast of Teesside. A course renowned for being a bit "easy", with not many major features or tricky tee shots, big moves were expected in the league and of course, big competition for the new and very nice trophy that is, the Seniors Vase.
The older gentleman of the society were chosen to be captains on the day, with a late comer "Butler Medium" jumping in the 9th and final captain spot. Massive speculation went around the group regarding one of the members real ages, but thats a story for another day. The wheel was done in the club house, which was a cracking addition to the morning, the teams were set and it was game on. The format was a 3 ball stableford total, with all scores counting on all holes.
Early round rumours spread fast, in that Patty "The Lampost" Stokes had an astronomical start, 20 points through 5 holes, it looked to be game over, but was it? Throston has a reputation for delivering ridiculous scores, and exactly that happened on the day.
5 players came back with 40+ points, as stated, very typical of Throston, with just the 14! players managing 35 points or more. Walking into the club house with anything less than 40 points, you just know you might not even make the money, mental.
In 3rd spot with 42 points, putting on a masterclass with the flat stick, was Michael "I was in the Army" Mathie. In second, still with an absolute BANDICAP, managing 43 points was Marky Medium Butler. However, the rumours turned out to be true and the wheels didn't quite fall off for the big man, Patty Stokes takes the top spot with a 46 point round, excellent shooting from all. However, we weren't here for league standings, we were here for the silverware...
Coming in 2nd, with a total of 113 stableford points, was Captain Kitchy Yaya, Ste "Mr USA" Eastick and Jakey "Jetaire" Arondelle.
And the winners, with a total of 115 points, playing a blinder on the day, Captain Marky "Medium" Butler, Ad "The captain" Gray and Jamie "Lar de Dar" Simcox. Well done lads.
Next up, our first autumnal outing at Woodham GC.
Autumn is well and truly here now, with leaves on the ground, grey clouds in the sky and waterproofs in the bag, EGS visited Woodham GC for the 9th league outing of 2022.
With not much separating the business end of the league standings, there was plenty to play for today. We also managed to plan in 3 of the 4 remaining quarter final matchplay games, making for some interesting teams. One of the long drive awards was planned in for the par 5, 1st hole, putting a chunk of pressure on the lads, already nervy first tee shots. As usual and without fault, James "Big Bazza" Barron walloped one down the centre, carrying 300+ yards, winning hole 1 on the day, 5 long drives in total for him this season. Graeme "Boom Boom"Bailey took the second longest drive of the day, taking his total up to 4. The Long drive trophy seems to be a 2 horse race. Pin seekers were won by Ado "The Nightshift" Carter and guest and possible new member Daz Mobberley.
The singles games saw Chris Peers take a convincing win over Graeme Bailey 7&5, with James Barron ending Mark Butlers winning streak, taking the win 6&4. Lastly, following a battle all the way to the 18th hole Tom "The Train" Nelson took the win from Garry "The Youngen" Bainbridge, 1up. There were also 5 twos on the day, meaning the 2 sweep will rollover to the next outing, building the pot nicely.
The best guest prize was won by Neill Rowling, taking the win over Rich Coull and Daz Mobberley.
Now then, is it possible for a man to win the wooden spoon and the league title in the same year? Maybe, as Rob Cotts matched his career best shooting an 88 gross for 47 points, just a steady 3 points above Chris Peers, coming home with a gross 79 and 44 points. In 3rd, and after some deliberation on scores, Patty Stokes managed a 40 point outing, leap frogging Mark Butler and Jonathan Saint into the top spot in the league. Last but not least, a superb battle between Adam Gray and Stefan Butler took place, in which Ad Gray took the win on count back for 37 points, this moving him out of 5th place into 2nd place.
Is is the gaffers last year with silverware on his mantlepiece? With two outings left to play in 2022, the league standings top 10 are as follows:
1. Patrick Stokes - 41.33
2. Adam Gray - 41
3. Mark Butler - 40.66
4. Jonathan Saint 40.33
5. Chris Peers 40.33
6. Ste Kitch - 39.66
7. Stefan Butler 39.66 (2021 winner)
8. Jake Arondelle 37.66
9. Graeme Bailey 37.66
10. Ste Eastick - 37
The singles games remaining are as follows:
